We’d never met Andrew Garfield,’ Mulligan recalls. ‘Keira and I were enjoying being together again – to the extent that a few days into rehearsal, Mark told us to go and talk to Andrew. And he was right – because these characters are a threesome, we needed to be tight.

“Keira and I met on Pride and Prejudice, but we didn’t become friends until the following year, when we were promoting the film. We got close because we’re both the same age, we both live in London and have the same circle of friends. It was great to work with her again on Never Let Me Go but it’s funny because in Pride and Prejudice I only had three lines. To do something equal to her, where we’re challenging each other, is great. I feel so lucky.”
